My name is Jasleen Kaur, and I am currently a full-time student at IUPUI studying Human and Health Sciences. I moved to this country when I was only 6 years old, and throughout my life experiences, I learned the true meaning of empathy, humility, and compassion. I have developed a deep desire to provide resources to individuals who are in the same position I was in when I was young.

1. Learning Journey

Throughout the Health Sciences program, my understanding of healthcare has grown tremendously—from viewing it through a basic clinical lens to appreciating the deeper intersections of patient care, health equity, prevention, and interdisciplinary collaboration. One of the most transformative experiences was learning how health education and policy can shape community outcomes. This made me realize the importance of addressing social determinants of health and fueled my interest in both direct patient care and systems-level improvement. Courses that involved patient case studies and ethical dilemmas pushed me to think more critically and holistically about healthcare delivery.

2. Skill Development

Over the course of this program, I’ve developed into a more confident communicator, problem solver, and team player. Presenting on community health initiatives and participating in collaborative group projects taught me how to speak clearly, listen actively, and contribute meaningfully even when opinions differed. I also grew as a creative thinker—especially when designing interventions or proposing care models for underserved populations. This course challenged my assumptions and helped me build skills in research, cultural competency, and evidence-based reasoning that I’ll carry forward in my future work.

3. Challenges and Triumphs

This capstone course came at a time when I was juggling a lot—working, preparing my application for PA school, searching for an internship, and still trying to stay on top of schoolwork. It felt overwhelming at times trying to meet deadlines while also making sure I had strong application materials and enough clinical experience. I constantly had to adjust my schedule, sacrifice sleep, and push through exhaustion. But despite the stress, I kept going. I learned how to prioritize what mattered most, stay focused on my long-term goals, and not be afraid to ask for help when I needed it. This experience taught me that growth often happens during the most chaotic seasons—and that I’m capable of more than I realized.

4. Impact on Career Goals

This capstone confirmed my passion for healthcare and made my goal of becoming a Physician Assistant even more clear. I’ve always known I wanted to make a difference, but through this course, I discovered that I’m particularly drawn to community-based care and health education. It also reinforced my interest in addressing barriers faced by non-English speaking patients, something I’ve seen firsthand in both clinical and community settings. The capstone helped me envision myself not just as a future PA, but as an advocate, educator, and leader in health equity.

5. Future Application

I plan to carry the knowledge and skills from this program into every step of my professional life—from PA school to future clinical practice. I’ve learned how to assess needs, communicate across cultures, and think critically about health interventions. In the future, I want to lead or contribute to community health initiatives, especially ones focused on preventive care and underserved populations. I’ll continue building on the research, leadership, and patient-centered thinking I gained here through continued education, mentorship, and hands-on clinical experience.

Thank you

Cardiovascular Diseases

In the course Medical Aspects and Psychosocial Aspects, the presentation on cardiovascular diseases was an excellent opportunity for me to learn about various aspects of heart disease, including the anatomy of the heart, statistics, lifestyle choices, technology, and psychosocial impacts. I found it intriguing to understand how people from diverse backgrounds are struggling to maintain their health due to disparities in today's society, which increases the risk of heart disease. The knowledge I gained has given me the confidence to tackle this issue effectively in the future.

Implementation and Evaluation in Health Sciences and Rehabilitation

Reflection

Reflection

Through the course "Implementation and Evaluation in Health Sciences and Rehabilitation," I gained valuable experience in designing and implementing health programs for our community. This course emphasized the diverse qualities of program planning, allowing me to explore and develop key components essential for successful implementation.

As part of the course, I designed an Education and Vaccine Administration Program. This project involved strategic planning in areas such as identifying the target environment, developing a detailed budget, and creating a step-by-step model to achieve the program's goals. Key elements, including objectives, services, and target audiences, were carefully analyzed and incorporated into the program design.

The resources linked below provide a comprehensive overview of the program's planning and implementation process, highlighting the steps taken to bring this initiative to life.

Dance

I frequently assist at my family's business, specializing in eyebrow threading and lash applications. I take great care to ensure each service is executed with precision, creating a clean and polished look. In this field, attention to detail is essential, and I strive to consistently deliver exceptional results

Research

I have been assisting in research for individuals who are seeking prenatal genetic care. As part of my role, I have created brochures to help patients understand the testing processes and learn more about the relevant information. Additionally, I am involved in the clinical side of postpartum depression screenings. As part of this, I work with women who are experiencing depression during or after their pregnancy to help them get the care they need.

During the year, there will be people who want to learn traditional Punjabi folk dance and I will be one of the teachers. I will also be responsible for choreographing some of the dances. Occasionally, our group will perform at events where we can showcase our dance skills.

Clinical

I have several years of clinical experience and I am currently working as a Medical Assistant at a Family Medicine Center. Additionally, I am a vaccinator for a non-profit immunization clinic. Our team travels to different schools and areas with limited resources to provide vaccines to individuals. We also collaborate with immigrant welcome centers to offer more resources to immigrants in the area.
